What is this about?
The Sight Awareness for Everyone (SAFE) course is for people who are experiencing sight loss. The course, which is relaxed and informative, runs for seven weeks. The aim is to equip people with information about the services, opportunities, equipment and training available locally and nationally. Armed with this information individuals can then make informed choices in order to maintain independence and dignity.
What has it done so far?
The course has been running for about 16 years and has been positively received by hundreds of people. One service user said :
“I don’t feel alone with my condition now and have hope for the future, which did feel somewhat bleak beforehand” (C. R. visually impaired service user).
The sessions are facilitated by NSBP volunteers and Professionals from different organisations are invited each week to speak about the services, equipment and support they offer.
When and where is it held?
The course runs for seven weeks on Friday mornings from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. The course is held in NSBP’s activity room on the third floor MEA house. The sessions are informal and individuals are encouraged to ask questions, discuss problems and to share solutions to every day difficulties
